New York Red Bulls Bio
One of the founding members of the MLS, RB, was originally called the New York /New Jersey MetroStars before Red Bull took ownership and rebranded the club in 2006.
The takeover has sparked a new, more stable era at the club, and their first piece of silverware arrived in 2013 when they lifted the Supporters’ Shield. RB has won the same trophy twice since 2015 and most recently in 2018.
While several household names have turned out for the club, including Thierry Henry and Youri Djorkaeff, New York Red Bulls have become synonymous with producing their own stars in recent years. Their academy is one of the most successful breeding grounds for talent in the MLS.

Manager – Gerhard Struber
Austrian coach Gerhard Struber has been in the Red Bulls’ hotseat since October 2020, and the 44-year-old will be determined to improve on his modest 30%-win rate since taking the reins. Struber had shorts stints with English Championship club Barnsley and Wolfsberger in his homeland before moving to the MLS last year.

Cristian Cásseres Jr
Dynamic Venezuelan midfielder Cristian Cásseres Jr has added goals to his combative game this season, and his four-goal haul for the campaign is already a joint-career best. The 21-year-old also remains one of the MLS’s best ball winners, and Cásseres Jr averages an impressive 4.1 tackles per 90 minutes in 2021.
Aaron Long
US national team regular Aaron Long is a cornerstone defender for RB, though an Achilles injury keeps him on the sidelines. The 28-year-old – who has been capped 23 times – was named MLS Defender of the Year in 2018 and after a move to Europe failed to transpire shortly after, Long has looked settled in New York.
Kyle Duncan
Brooklyn-born local hero Kyle Duncan is considered one of the MLS’s brightest prospects, and the flying right-back has been averaging an impressive 3.1 tackles and 2.3 interceptions for NYC Red Bulls in 2021. The 23-year-old won his first cap for the USMNT against El Salvador in December last year, and Duncan is expected to be a prominent figure at the international level over the next decade.
One to watch – Patryk Klimala
Polish youth international Patryk Klimala swapped Scotland and Celtic for New York and the Red Bulls in April after a sluggish start to life in the MLS. The 22-year-old is finally starting to slow flashes of his ability. Klimala has bagged two goals and four assists in just six starts for his new employers, and you get the sense that the attacker could be a real force once he fully finds his feet.
New York Red Bulls Stadium
The Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, is a 25,000-seater purpose-built soccer stadium opened in 2010. National Women’s Soccer League outfit NJ/NY Gotham FC also plays their home games there. In addition, the stadium has hosted international fixtures, concerts, and other sporting events since the ribbons were cut.

New Jersey-born forged a reputation between the sticks for the MetroStars between 2008 and 2003 before Premier League giants Manchester United came calling. Howard enjoyed a superb first season at Old Trafford before a move to Everton beckoned. The elite shot-stopper enjoyed a successful career at Goodison Park before returning to the MLS with Colorado Rapids in 2016.
Mike Petke
Another New York native, Petke kicked off his career with the club and played well over 100 times for the MetroStars between 1998 and 2002. Petke returned for a final campaign with the Red Bulls in 2009, and the legendary club man even enjoyed a stint as manager between 2012 and 2015.
Amado Guevara
2004 MLS Most Valuable Player and three-time MLS All-Star Guevara scored 32 times in 103 appearances in New York between 2003 and 2006, and the Honduran midfielder will go down as one of the finest players to ever pull on the shirt.
Juan Pablo Angel
Colombian superstar Angel notched 62 goals in only 102 run-outs for the Red Bulls, and the former Aston Villa man captained the club to their one and only MLS Cup Final appearance in 2008.
Thierry Henry
World Cup winner Thierry Henry started his MLS adventure with Red Bulls in 2010, and the prolific Frenchman scored 51 times and registered 37 assists in 122 appearances for the club.
